The year 2009 has been shaping up quick as the coming out party for resveratrol, with the major media mileage that this polyphenolic compound has been getting such as last March’s feature made by the CBS syndicated talk show “The Doctors” on the resveratrol Jarrow formulation.  Resveratrol and its strong anti-oxidant properties have also been tackled in the television program “60 Minutes” and in two episodes of the Oprah Winfrey Show.

The 60 Minutes show re-examined the so-called French Paradox linking high consumption of red wine to a remarkably lower incidence of heart disease despite high-fat diet among the French, and that the resveratrol content of red wine could be responsible for this puzzler.  Also noted in the program were other resveratrol benefits such as life-prolonging properties through the prevention of illnesses brought about by aging.

This latter benefit was echoed in the Ophrah show that had Michael J. Fox talking about his Parkinson’s disease and resveratrol’s role in treating such an illness.   Similarly, the benefits of the reservatrol Jarrow formulation were discussed in the CBS syndicated hit program “The Doctors” hosted by four physicians with each having a separate specialty.

The media attention that reservatrol has been getting is well deserved as several scientific studies have demonstrated its potential for the enhancement of health and well being. Just last November 2008, a research at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College showed that supplementing diet with resveratrol reduced plaque formation significantly in animal brains.  The formation of plaque is associated with neurodegenearive diseases like Alzheimer’s.

A separate study at the French Institute of Genetics and Molecular Cell Biology showed that mice treated to a 15-week diet of resveratrol exhibited better treadmill endurance. This French finding supported the hypothesis of earlier researches which demonstrated that the effects of reserveratrol result from the promotion of Sirtuin 1 gene activity linked with longevity in some yeasts, worms and fish species.

What makes the potential for further development of resveratrol exciting is that this polyphenolic compound could be derived from many natural sources.  These sources include red wine, grapes, purple grape juice, peanuts and some berries.

The resveratrol Jarrow formulation is indicative of this variety of sources.   Each tablet of this supplement has anthocyanins (grape skin), proanthocyanins or OPCs derived from grape seed, resveratrol extracts from the roots of Huzhang (tiger cane).  Other ingredients include catechins (green tea), resveratrol (3, 4, 5-trihydrooxysilbene) and biologically active flavonoid resveratrol.
